Wood vs. vinyl vs. aluminum fence in Florida The material decides how a fence fails here, and whether a repair is a picket-and-hardware job or a specialty replacement.

Here's the honest read for Florida humidity and salt air. - Wood.

Warm, private, and the easiest to repair one board at a time.

But it's also the material this climate fights hardest.

Humidity and soil moisture rot posts at the base, UV grays and checks the boards, and salt air eats the fasteners.

The upside is that wood repairs are true carpentry: swap the rotted post, splice sound pickets, re-hang the gate with corrosion-resistant hardware.

It stays fixable for a long time if you stay ahead of it. - Vinyl (PVC).

Fence repair you can do yourself Some of this is honest DIY.

If you're handy with a drill and a level, try this before you call anyone: - Swap a cracked or missing picket.

Unscrew the bad board, cut a replacement to length, and fasten it to the rails with corrosion-resistant screws.

On wood, match the profile; on vinyl and aluminum, order the matching panel. - Re-hang a sagging gate.

A sagging gate is usually loose or corroded hinge hardware, not a bent frame.

Replace the hinges and latch with stainless or coated hardware, and add an anti-sag cable kit if the frame has racked. - Tighten and replace hardware.

Rusted screws, brackets, and post caps are a straightforward swap.

Use stainless or hot-dipped galvanized so you're not doing it again next salt season. - Reset a slightly loose post (dry ground only).

If a wood or vinyl post is just a little loose and the ground is dry, you can sometimes re-tamp and re-set it.

If it's rotted at the base, that's a replacement, not a re-tamp.

That's the real DIY list.

What's not on it: pulling and re-setting a rotted post in concrete, straightening a whole racked run, or rebuilding a gate frame.

When fence repair is the wrong call Here's the line a lot of companies won't draw for you, because a full replacement is a bigger ticket.

Don't pay for fence repair if any of these is true: - Most of the posts are rotted or heaved.

If more than about a third of the run has failed at the base, patching sections is a losing game.

You'll be back at it next storm season.

That's a replacement, and an honest one. - You're chasing a lean the soil hasn't finished making.

On a brand-new build still settling in fill soil, a post you reset today can tip again as the ground keeps moving.

Sometimes the right call is to wait a season, not to pay twice. - It's a property-line or HOA dispute, not a repair.

If the question is who owns the fence or whether it meets community rules, sort that out first.
